Hello All

I inherited a small set of Gorham Etruscan from my grandparents. They had inherited it from a distant relative. On the back of each piece is marked W.E. Avery. I have been able to track down a jeweler in Columbia SC (where we live) by that name in the 1890-1900 but haven't been able to find an address or actual date of operation. If anyone has any additional information I would greatly appreaciate it.

Thanks

Robert

Walter Eugene Avery was born in Alabama 14 October 1859 and died 1 December 1939 in Columbia, South Carolina. The gentleman was buried in Elmwood Cemetary on 2 December 1939. Walter's father James L Avery was a Florida and Alabama watchmaker.

In 1893 W E Avery of Columbia, South Carolina advertised for an engraver in the Jeweler's Circular. He had a child born in Georgia in 1892, so he must have been first setting himself up in business in Columbia in 1893.

In the 1930 U S Federal Census for Columbia, South Carolina, W E Avery was still operating a jewelry store. By this time W E was just over seventy, so he may not have had too many years left in the business. His son Walter did go into the jewelry business, but does not appear to be around Columbia after 1920.

I am afraid that's as much as I can do with him. A trip to the main library in Columbia will probably fill in a lot more blanks here than I can though. City directories, newspaper archives and local history should be very informative. Good luck and congratulations on coming into something interesting from your own part of the country.

In the 1936 Columbia Directory, W E Avery (Sr)is in a partnership with T Middleton Harvery as Avery & Harvey jewelers, Columbia, South Carolina and that just means that your set was most likely purchased some time before 1936.

The Gorham Etruscan pattern came out in 1913, so that narrows your window some.

Thank you Bascall. Do you have a copy of the Columbia Directory or is it online? I am amazed at what you were able to tell me since Columbia isn't a big silver area. You really have provided me with the answers to the questions (the address and time frame) that I was really looking for.

Thanks again

Robert

You are very welcome. Most of the information that I was able to find out about W E Avery came from ancestry.com.
If I dare say this, you can do a two week free trial with them. Whether that gives you access to all that you'd like to see is another question. It takes many people, myself included, a while to become accustomed to using their site.

Although not so much this time around, google books is often a good source for directory information. Internet archives is another, and there may be some other sites that I don't know about that are helpful.
