This is one of my very favorite pieces of silver; I only hope to own an original some day. For those not familiar, also known as a dish ring.

Hi guys,

I have heard this called a "dish" ring forever.. "Potato" ring is new to me.. If the Met calls it a potato ring, so it must be.
Would you elaborate on this..

Thanks much.

"Potato ring" was a term commonly used for these things in the late 19thC and earlier 20thC. It was apparently a rather fanciful, perhaps romantic usage, probably promoted by the antique silver trade. Later more critical studies of their use brought about the recognition that their function was to hold dishes clear of the table top to avoid damaging it. The Met Museum, on its website, shows nine of these things, all Irish, and all now called "dish rings".
