and an unrecorded (to my knowledge) partnership.

quote:
Worcester April 30 1836

Messrs J. Bigelow & Co

Gent. I write [unreadable] informing you that the store is so nearly completed that it will be expedient for one of you to come up as soon as Tuesday next for the purpose of taking an account of stock & consummation of our copartnership. We should be happy to see Mrs Bigelow with you. I will be ready to go immediately about taking the account Tuesday morning so as not to detain you more than 2 or 3 days at most — if I hear nothing from you presently I will expect you at this time

Yours very Respy

Rufus D. Dunbar

The co-partnership was apparently of short duration, as Dunbar joined with Simeon N. Story as DUNBAR & STORY in 1838.

The tentative identification for Rufus's son strikes me as being confirmable. Edward H Dunbar is a jeweler and watch repairer in mid 1880's Westerly, Rhode Island directories at the address shown on the trade card.

A George H Dunbar who I take as Edward's brother is listed at that same business address as a salesman.

Edward is found later working as a jeweler in Medfield and then Norwood, Massachusetts.

I came to the same conclusion just after the last build.

George is with another brother, Albert, in Worcester, Massachusetts in 1900. They're both insurance clerks. So it appears George never took to his father's trade.

Interesting yes, and a learning experience for me.

I have never seen the word respy before.

I checked my very old, 6 inch thick, Oxford dictionary and then online Webster's and other online dictionaries and they all don't have Respy. The online Urban Dictionary does:

quote:

Respectfully; chiefly used in the US military culture as a closure to memos. Note that "Respy" is used to show respect for the persons rank, not necessarily the person, and can close a memo to both a superior and a subordinate.

    Skipper,

Enclosed please find this morning's operational status report.

    Respy, Lt. Jones

respectfully closure memo memorandum military

I do see that Respy was used often in the 1800's. A quick search and Respy shows up in the handful of correspondence from circa 1860's. The use of Respy does seem to be between military or officials; so the online Urban Dictionary may have it right.

It is actually Resp(superior y), which is not uncommon in the various 19th letters I have. I also find

Y(rs) tr(y)-- Yours truly
Y(r) Ob(t) Serv(t) -- Your Obedient Servant
Aff(y) Yr(s) -- Affectionately yours
T(y) Fr(d) -- Thy friend

and other variant contractions. With blotty ink and a scratchy, hasty hand, it is sometimes a heck of a job figuring out what is meant.

Almost nothing new is new; the package may have been changed, but the contents, examined closely, remain pretty much the same.

I often feel the same.

WEV,

I must admit I am unsure what "... Resp(superior y) ..." is/means. But it has me thinking.

Right now I am of a mind to interpret "respy" as an abbreviation to mean "respectfully" or "respectfully yours"

Might this also be correct?
