This is the smallest pair of tongs I have ever seen! They were made by Gorham, it looks like around 1885-1890, and are marked with the company's trademark and "56". As can be seen from the image, they are quite diminutive. They are 1 5/8" long. I'm not sure what these could have been made to serve, so I tentatively guess they were toy or doll tongs.

Very neat, Paul. They must have been from a doll set, though I don't know of any other miniatures made by Gorham.

I have seen similar tongs as a set with a pill box... for picking up small pills. But I'm not sure when those were made, so the era may be wrong.

I have seen tongs like this as part of a dresser set, used for some cosmetic purpose.

Can't shed light on what they are for, but I do think it interesting that we have completely forgotten what the actual function of a lot of objects was even 100 years later.
