I have a large collection of old medici silver.

In a previous post, it was indicated that dinner knives will have Gorham Mfg Co imprinted on the blades. My silver was made before 1865 (Gorham Co. rather than Mfg Co) but my dinner knives have steel blades (Steel noted at base of blade) with no Gorham marking at all.

Here's a picture of the blade:

Have the blades been replaced?

Thanks for your advice/opinion.

Hello Jan,

First of all, the Old Medici pattern was introduced around 1880, so your set can't be any older than that. Don't read too much into the exact wording of marks; Gorham used a variety of marks and they aren't always a reliable way to date a piece.

It sounds like your knives have original silverplated carbon steel blades. Silverplated blades are often unmarked, especially with old Gorham patterns like Medici. A picture of a knife would help us be certain, but I would bet that your knives are all original.

Thanks, Brent.

The book from the Denver Public Library showed Gorham & Co. 1852-1865 with the Bull-Anchor-G and the Lion-Anchor-G showing up after 1885 (don't have the book name cuz I copied the pages from the library...)

Since my old medici has the bull, I figured 1865.

Thank heavens for this forum or I'd have put my faith in the book!
