This is an item I was surprised to find signed "The Gorham Co."

Paul Lemieux' Gorham book name plate is not the only surprising item bearing a Gorham signature.

This microscope bears the script signature "Gorham Co. & Brown / Providence, R.I. This company is dated as 1856 in the Fredyma Directory for Rhode Island, citing an early edition of Rainwater. It is not mentioned in my revised 3rd edition. Anyone have more information?

The microscope is known to have been made in Paris by Georges Oberhaeuser, or by his nephew and apprentice, Edmund Hartnach, who took over the business in 1857 (there are identical examples signed by each). It was obviously imported and retailed by Gorham Co. & Brown. Knowing the exact dates during which this Gorham firm operated under this name would help determine under whose direction this microscope was made.

I entirely missed this post; my apologies.

The firm under that name existed from 1856 to 1878, when its offices were moved to the opposite side of Westminster Street and the name changed to Henry Brown & Co. with Brown, Gorham Thurber and Henry Tilden as principles.
