Pictured is a Shiebler object. It is 5-5/16 long and the round part is 1-1/4" in diameter. I do not know what it is. The ornamental part is not very deep, but could conceivably serve as some kind of spoon. The person I bought it from on eBay said it was a hat pin, but the stem is too thick and not pointed (and it has not been altered). Any ideas??

Paul, it is deinitely a spoon, though because the shallow bowl is so unusual we are reluctant to say more.

A dealer who offered a set speculated that they are parfait spoons.

I would be inclined to some sort of individual server -- a nut spoon or the like. That center bottom mount of the handle to the bowl would make it very awkward in the mouth (not that that ever stopped a flatware designer!).

Couldn't this be a cocktail stir?

My vote is for the cocktail stirrer. I see many similar items that are manufactured in Mexico... They are often sipping straws as well. It is a nice item and probably was produced as a set of 6, 8, or 12.

ringboxlady--my piece does not have a pierced bowl; however, i did see the same item on eBay a few months ago that did have piercing. so i'm not sure if there's a difference in function between my piece and that other one.

Here is another unusual spoon that seems to relate to Paul's Shiebler piece. Although about an inch shorter, the construction is about the same, with the addition of two thin stems extending from the base on either side.

Although unmarked, my piece is almost certainly Japanese or from another Far Eastern country. The piece represents a lotus blossom, with less fully-opened blossom on one side and a seed pod on the other. The Shiebler piece, though simplified, is clearly also intended to be a lotus blossom.

I would guess that a spoon like mine was the original inspiration for the Shiebler piece. Unfortunatley, I still have no idea how either piece was intended to be used. The bowl on my piece is more dish shaped, and more practical for use as a spoon. The thin stems on either side actually make the piece far more practical to use, and they keep the stem from spinning in your hand. I wish I knew what it was used for!
