I recently acquired this Shiebler teaspoon, but I am unfamilar with the pattern. Does anyone have a name for this pattern, or other pieces in it? The marks are the conventional winged S and STERLING, as well as an incuse capital "A". Any idea what the "A" might stand for?

Thanks!

Brent

Brent, we don't know of a name for the pattern, but we have seen several pieces other than teaspoons, including:

canape knife, 5.25"

bon bon server, 4.875"

tea knife, 7"

jam spoon, 5.625"

grapefruit spoon, 5.75"

and a teaspoon different than yours, where the decoration wanders to the center of the handle, 5.875"

We have noted that most are not place pieces; does this suggest anything?

It would appear that the A B C might designate the style/pattern. All the items marked with the A are the same style/pattern.

There is a Souvenir Teaspoon on eBay, Item # 912142976, ending 10/18/02. It has the same flower placement as Brent's.

The following is an item description from an eBay listing of a spoon in this pattern (I neglected to save pictures of the spoon before the seller removed them from her server). However, the description is excellent, so perhaps it will give some idea of the spoon.
quote:
This unique sterling silver Shiebler serving spoon has a matching spoon rest. The spoon is about 9 1/4 inches long. The spoon bowl is gilded on both sides and has an ornate floral cut-out design. The spoon rest is 4 inches wide. It "sits on" two ball feet. Its design matches the ornate cut-out spoon bowl, but it is not gilded. The spoon handle is decorated down one side with a floral design. No monogram or monogram removal. Both pieces are in excellent condition. The spoon is marked on the back with the Shiebler maker's mark (winged S), A, Sterling, and J.E. Caldwell & Co. The spoon rest is marked on the back with the Shiebler maker's mark, Sterling, and 4956.

I did see the listing when the pictures were up. The bowl was along the same lines as that of the bon bon spoon Cheryl & Richard posted a photograph of. As mentioned in the description, the spoon rest was identical to the spoon bowl. It was a neat set alright.

The item number was 901505941.

It is interesting that each stamped letter--so far, A, B, & C have been posted--represents a variation of the pattern. Each variation entails slightly different handle shape (if you cover up the floral half of "A", you're left with something almost like "Fiddle"), as well as the varying presentation of the floral/scroll decoration. For instance, while that of "A" clings to the left side of the handle, that of "B" sort of trails along the middle of the handle. It would interesting to know if there are any other letters out there, and if the differences between each letter remain consistent over all examples.

It is neat to see so many different examples. I think you must be right; the letters must designate the pattern variation, just like the different Flora variations have different numbers.

This pattern's sardine fork is pictured in the November/December 2000 issue of Silver Magazine.
