FYI: Have you seen the ebay listing #151993424? It is an unusual set of Shiebler sugar basket and creamer. Just thought you may want to take a look.

quote:
Being offered is matching circa 1885 sterling silver "naturalistic" creamer and sugar basket by George Shiebler, formed as highly realistic veined leaves with crimped edges, each handle applied with a spider. Note realistic detail of spiders, down to their hairy legs. No monogram or removal. Sugar basket measures 5 inches long by 3 * inches tall; creamer 5 inches tall by 2 inches long. Marked with Shiebler's winged S, Sterling, 360, JE Caldwell & Co. (retailer). In excellent condition. (Similar pieces were featured in 1996 article in The Magazine Antiques--winning bidder will receive copy of article.)

That was a treat to look at... Thanks for bringing it to our attention. It must of been a fun piece to make. It appears the spiders were fabricated using wire and then chased to create the hairlike texture. I wonder if it came with a spoon?

Hi, I'm new to your boards and to silver.
I have a tea strainer with the Shiebler/sterling stamp on the back and a number 278. I've been going crazy trying to find out the pattern name, and see now that it is very much like the picture you've posted, but without the spiders. It looks to be to be a cabbage or grape leaf, and also looks quite similar to the cabbage s&p
shakers with spiders that I saw online. Does 278 refer to the pattern name? Does anyone have any other information about this?
The tea strainer (I haven't a photo of it yet) has a curled veined leaf, on a silver handle, and appears to be vermeil or gold washed on the bowl.

Thanks for any thoughts you may have.

Anastasia
