Here is an interesting Shiebler coffee spoon. The handle is enameled with a stacked cipher of CMO or OMC. The bowl is deeply engraved "XIX", and the back is inscribed "Nov. 19th 1896." I wondered if the date had anything to do with XIX, since that's the Roman numeral for 19. Can anybody throw light on this spoon? I thought perhaps it was custom made for some kind of convention/event, or custom made for CMO's (or OCM's) 19th birthday which was on Nov. 19 1896 (that might be a stretch biggrin ).

Paul, that is way cool!
For some reason it suggests a private club (the Old Men's Club?); perhaps a souvenir of a dinner to celebrate the 19th anniversary.

This is certainly scratching at straws, but this book:
Past and Present of Livingston County
Volume 1. History

by Major A. J. Roof. 1913
lists the following:

quote:
"The XIX Club, of Chillicothe, was organized in 1893 at the home of Mrs. Reuben Barney, Jr., with twelve charter members. This was the first literary club organized in Chillicothe and began the study of English literature. The members are now taking their third course in English. The club has a membership of thirty. Mrs. P. W. Hartman is president of the club."

Patrick, that's great. Sounds better than my birthday idea. Now if we could only figure out what OMC/CMO is. Perhaps the "C" stands for Chillicothe?
