A friend brought by a real mixed bag of silver by tonight seeking some identifications. Most were standard coin with a bit of nice Whiting Lily and a slew of souvenir spoons. There were, however, some taste treats including a few nice Tiffany Wavy Edge pieces and these two, which I don't know. The first is a substantial placespoon with a gilt bowl.

It is marked lower case m, TIFFANY & Co., Sterling.
The second is a serving spoon (of a pair) and has very rubbed marks that look vaguely like Tiffany's with a cap M.

Pardon the poor scan. The fern leaf pattern is beautifully cut and unworn.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Hello WEV,

The top one is of interest to me, because it is another ANTIQUE ENGRAVED variation. Tiffany apparently made quite a few different ANTIQUE ENGRAVED patterns, but very few of them seem to show up on the antiques market. The most common is ANTIQUE IVY, which was made in some abundance. I have two other variations, which are pictured in previous posts. I have seen at least one other for sale on eBay, but this one is new to me. Glad to see it!

The lower one is a piece of the highly-sought-after "Lap Over Edge". Tiffany decorated these pieces with a large number of different motifs, usually etched but sometimes applied. Looks like you have a dandy example of a fern motif here. Great piece!

You can read about Tiffany's Antique Engraved in the book Tiffany Silver Flatware, 1845-1905: When Dining Was an Art, by Hood et. al., published by Antique Collectors' Club in 2000, pp. 202-208. The Lap Over Edge pattern is covered extensively in the same text, pp. 219-232.
