I own a large tray which is by Tiffany and Co. and it is silverplated. I was told that Tiffany produced fine silverplated wares from the American Civil War to the late 1800's? Are these dates correct? Any information on Tiffany's involvement in this silver genre appreciated.

Electroplated flatware made by other American makers was retailed by Tiffany & Co. ca. 1855-1885. Silver-plated flatware made by Tiffany was sold from 1885-1930s. Tiffany may have made a few pieces of electroplated silver hollowware in the 1850s, but after the Civil War began to promote silver-plated hollowware actively. Many of the items were the same things the company was making in sterling--plates, platters, vases, etc. (although the decoration designs were usually different). But, in addition, Tiffany & Co. made in silver-plate unusual items not duplicated in sterling (e.g., an alcohol-burning portable stove).
