I recently became interested in collecting Tiffany flatware, and have just finished reading the terrific Tiffany Silver Flatware book. I have been looking for lap-over-edge pieces, and was excited to find a teaspoon at a reasonable price - however, it has no design etched or engraved into it, just an "ABL" monogram on the front and "1930" on the back. The "lap" folds over onto the front of the handle, not the back. The hallmark reads "Tiffany&Co Sterling PAT (can't make out date exactly)" and what looks like an "m" following. There are no "plain" versions of lap-over-edge illustrated in the Flatware book - is this a later version or variation on the pattern? I'm thinking of buying some more pieces similar to this one, but I am unsure if it is much more new than I thought (I was hoping for late 1800's to very early 1900s).
Thanks for any help.

Thanks for your provocative inquiry. There are no Tiffany archival records that address this question. Experience has shown that Lap Over Edge pieces lapped to the front are rare. Of these, they often have only engraved or chased decoration, as in the example in Fig. 333, p. 221, Tiffany Silver Flatware. Presumably all these variations of the more common lapped-to-the-back, etched Lap Over Edge were custom orders. I have never seen a piece as you describe, i.e., lapped to the front, with no decoration on the front. But there is no reason to believe that Tiffany & Co. would not have supplied such pieces, if that is what the customer wanted. The date letter on your piece is probably the stylized m used during the Tiffany presidency of John C. Moore (1907-1947).

Thank you for the help!

Since Lap over edge remains my favorite pattern because of its graceful shape, I am now waiting for a set of forks, similar in that they are not etched or engraved except with a (different) monogram but with the lap also to the front.

Just for fun, I am including below a picture of the spoon I spoke of - by the way, recently I found reference to another spoon, exactly the same monogram, but without the "1930" on the back. Maybe I can reunite the set...
