Here's a piece of mixed metal, made by Tiffany in 1875, exhibited at the Centennial in 1876, and then sent over to Paris in 1878 for the Exposition Universelle. There, after helping Tiffany win more prizes, it was purchased by Mary Jane Morgan, and then sold out of her estate in 1886 in a famous auction in NYC. It resurfaced in 1998 at Sotheby's in NYC, where I was lucky enough to get it for The Newark Museum amidst the feeding frenzy over all the Manoogian silver.

Ulysses:

Can you please cite the name, number and exact date of the Sotheby's sale at which you purchased this item?

Geez. It was January 1998. I think January 20th, but I'm not certain. I'd have to pull the file, and I'm not at the office. Is that enough for now? It was the sale of the Masco Collection, and included the great "Conglomerate" vase by Tiffany. I went to fondle it and "say goodbye," and then John Ward pulled this piece off the shelf, all dirty and unloved, and I almost passed out.

I've always felt I had the edge because I was a French major in college and knew exactly the reference of the old French inscription.

Mention of the Masco sale is sufficient. Thanks.

Ulysses, It was in the afternoon sale after the morning Masco sale. I happened to be there getting a couple of not nearly as impressive pieces when Janet got it for you.
