I recently acquired this piece of Chrysanthemum and was wondering what it could be used for. It is 11 1/4 in long and the blade is 5 1/4 x 2 3/4 in and pierced with seahorses and shells. It’s a great old and heavy piece, and the piercing is spectacular. The piercing would lead me to believe it for fish, but I've never seen a round fish server. Anybody have other ideas?

Paul, This is a great piece and the piercing is fantastic. Your guess is correct. It is a fish server. Check out pgs. 122 & 123 in Hood. Congratulations on your acquisition of an extremely rare piece!

Richard's analysis is correct. Your fish server is a rare and beautiful piece. Have seen this piece type only in Lap Over Edge, Olympian and Chrysanthemum, plus a design drawing in Persian. The piercing design on your server is the prettiest I have seen. Most of the others have had the design illustrated in Hood et al., p. 123, Fig. 173.
