Here is a Tiffany whatzit for everyone to guess at. The petals are soft leather. The piece is about six inches across as shown. What do you think?

I have never seen anything like this, but it looks as if it were intended to hold something down--like a paperweight. But I don't know why it has the leather "petals."
Whatever it is, it's all the more unusual because it is Tiffany silver-plate, as indicated by the marks: "silver-soldered E.P.[electroplate]."

While we are awaiting a few other guesses about the whatzit ....

Does anyone know what the "P" is?

As a craftsman, I would be interested in seeing an image of the back and how the leather was attached and if it could be replaced periodicaly. Pen wipe is my vote as well, especially if the petals are replaceable.

Fred, here is the photo you requested.

As for the rest of you smart people, give yourself a prize. You are all correct!! biggrin

June and I prefer to do the whatzits when we can hear the knee jerk answers . The first guesses and the subsequent Ahhh's are so much fun.

Hi Guys,

You forgot the P mark. If I remember correctly it should be the fist letter of the president of Tifany's at the time the piece was made. What a great piece. Not too long before the real magnolias will be blooming here (Dallas)!

Hi, Louise. Actually, the P mark in this piece remains a bit of a mystery. The lettering scheme relating to the Tiffany presidents was used on sterling, but there's no indication that it was also used on silverplate. Also, there was no president whose name began with P during the time this practice was in effect. Maybe the P stands for Plate as in silverplate.

Scott, This is the first time I got to see the images of the dismantled pen wipe. Thanks ever so much. What a clever idea. Everyone should own one. If interested I could start production immediately..... (smile). It does interest me to see how things are assembled. The pen wipe was designed so that the suede could easily be replaced. Thanks again.

The "silver-soldered" mark appears on a variety of Tiffany pieces, often without the EP.

Wev, Thank you for being up this late and your response. I should have added that I had seen that too on this forum, but other than the rabbit no others. Are there more, and if so what kind?
Hope you are staying cool tonight, it's brutal here! Go Devils!
