Is this a sterling piece? Any other marks? I don't know for sure, but it certainly would suggest a piece sold at or made by a silversmith at Colonial Williamsburg. William deMatteo, Jr.,a New Jersey-born silversmith and son of a silversmith was an early maker of reproduction silver at Williamsburg. I have never heard of this mark before, so I speak from relative ignorance.

Stieff was commissioned in 1939 to produce reproduction silver for Williamsburg Restoration. In addition to "Williamsburg Restoration," I believe such pieces by them were also marked with a mark imitating a maker's/shipment mark used in Colonial Virginia. It kind of looks like "CW" with "4" above them and the leg of the 4 going between them, and "XX" beneath the leg of the 4. Other things, such as reproduction pottery, were also made.

You can see a terrific THE 1940 COLONIAL WILLIAMSBURG STERLING SILVER CATALOG.

According to this site:

quote:
"In 1939 Stieff was chosen by Colonial Williamsburg to create reproductions and adaptations of colonial silver. The first pieces were produced in 1940 and this rather formal catalog with a cord binding was produced. Shortly thereafter, WWII would cause Stieff to curtail major silver production until the end of the war. Only a few patterns were made during the war, and the Williamsburg pieces were not amongst those made during the war."
