I have seen some Theodor Starr-marked pieces with a star mark on them as well. For instance, this salt celler is marked "T. B. Starr," as well as with a star surmounted by a 5:

Ebay auction 515868799 has the same star mark, without the number above it.

What is the meaning of this star? I suspect it was inspired by the retailer's name. Could it be a mark signifying pieces made by Dominick & Haff especially for TB Starr? The eBay auction item has the same sort of repoussé as D & H items I've seen, and my salt dish is so close in design to other D & H pieces (for instance, there is a similarly-designed fish slice in the Sotheby's catalog for the Jerome Rapoport sale), and its legs are identical to legs on marked D & H salts, that I am virtually certain that it is by D & H.
