I ran across this lovely julep cup at auction (869738720) today and was intrigued by the marks:

The partnership of Augustus Hayden and W. G. Whilden, Charleston SC, lasted from 1855 to 1865, when Whilden enlisted for service in the last days of the Civil War. The use of "Eng. Sterling" is interesting and would be about as early as one might expect to see for a Southern maker/retailer. And who is "G & W?" Grosjean & Woodward?

VERY interesting piece. The G&W mark is almost certainly for Grosjean & Woodward; they produced similar wares with a similar "English Sterling" mark for Tiffany in the pre-Moore merger days. First time I've seen a mark like this for a Southern retailer, though.
