We contacted the Larchmont Yacht Club and got a gracious and prompt reply from Robert D. Snedeker, Rear Commodore:
quote:
Ladies/Gentlemen-

According to a history of our club that was written by a member about 15 years ago this trophy was in fact awarded annually to the winner of races between large Class A schooners at the 4th of July regatta; names of the winners were apparently engraved directly onto the trophy; at some point, probably by 1920, racing among such large yachts ceased and the trophy was retired; It remained on display at the club until the early 1980s when, regrettably, it was stolen along with a number of other silver trophies. As this coincided with a period of skyrocketing prices for precious metals, the presumption is that these trophies were melted for scrap resale. The thieves were never apprehended and no further information has surfaced regarding any of these trophies.

I hope this information proves useful.

Robert D. Snedeker
