Hello Again folks,

I was wondering if anyone has heard of Hipp & Coburn of Chicago. I have a Sterling Spoon with that name on the back as well as on the front cFs and the words Bear Ye One Anothers Burdens. I suspect it is a Religious Society depicted on the front. It is a Teaspoon.

Thank you
Roger

Hipp & Coburn is mentioned in Rainwaters book of Silver Manufacturers as being from Chicago and that is all. No mention of time frame. The phrase is from Galatians 6:2 and was often used as a motto for hospitals or as you mentioned a religious group. I have not been able to find any organization that uses CFS. I do not believe the Cystic Fibrosis organization would have dated back to this spoons time. My guess is that "C" may stand for Chicago or Christian. The "S" may be Society or Sanitorium.

Here is a bit more... Being raised a good Catholic boy.... I recall that St. Joseph, the patron saint of hospitals, is often depicted holding lillies. The flowers on the spoon appear are most certainly lillies. My guess is that this spoon commemorates a Catholic organization or hospital...

Ironically, I once had the exact same spoon, and couldn't find any information about it. I'm afraid I don't have much more to add, except that by the conventions of monogramming, the organaziation is likely to be CSF, rather than CFS.

Hello All,

Recently I was fortunate enough on-line to meet Joyce Lashmit, custodian of the National Spoon Library. The library is a repository of published information on souvenir spoons, and serves as a reference for spoon collectors clubs. She was kind enough to send me the following information about our mystery spoon:

quote:
FROM: A Third Harvest of Souvenir Spoons -- Anton Hardt -- pg. 23 (1969)
"The Girls' Friendly Society, an organization within the Protestant Episcopal Church, was founded in the 1870's and is world-wide in extent. Each group in the society is sponsored by an individual church, and all meetings and social gatherings are held in that church or in a building connected with it. For vacations, though, the girls go to a dwelling or a facility in a resort area - Mountains, beach, ranch - called 'Holiday House'."
So, the Girl's Friendly Society it is!
Thanks,
Joyce!
