In 1976, when my son was born, he was given a silver spoon by a friend who had made a trip to Williamsburg, Va. It was caled The Getty Spoon, made by the Stieff Co and came with a descrption on a card and its own little box. In addition to the company's mark and the word sterling, on the back, just above the bowl there is the mark--I (dot) G--For some reason, when we were moving, I persuaded myself to throw the box and description away. Does anyone know if it might be possible to get a duplicate of both or at least the description?

I believe that should be the Geddes Spoon. James Geddes, senior and junior, were probably the best known silversmiths working in colonial Williamsburg.

Your best bet would be to contact Customer Services for the Williamsburg Marketplace:
email catalog@cwf.org or call 1-800-414-6291 Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturdays, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern Time

My documentation shows that the name is James Geddy (1731-1807). I have recently seen a copy of the spoon you speak of here in Tucson. I do know that the spoon is still manufactured by Stieff. You can also purchase a handwrought spoon similar in design by the silversmiths at Williamsburg for substatially more money. A handwrought spoon is a delight to hold and eat with. The Geddy spoon is rather small as I remember and was found behind the Geddy home while they were excavating during restoration of Williamsburg.

Many thanks to wev and fredz for the info. I was able to reach Colonial Williamsburg and spoke to someone who knocked himself out trying to find a box and 'product tag'. Was successful as to the former, which he will send me, unsuccessful as to the latter, which I am still looking for. fredz advised me to contact Lenox, current owner of Stieff, which I will do. thanks again.

after much time, I have finally gotten in touch with someone at the Lenox company who has told me that they do not have a product tag for my Geddy spoon and that there is no record of the company having made that spoon--they don't have very good archives (which I can't believe--they must concern themselves with commercial considerations only) I guess I have to give up, which isn't tragic since anyone who looks at the marks can tell what the spoon is, but it's disappointing. If anyone has any ideas or hears anything about how to get one or of anyone who has one who would xerox it, let me know.

Apropos of my other request--for a toddler spoon in an Uncle Wiggly pattern made by the Webster company--I've been unlucky at that too. The silver dealer I asked to look for it hasn't had any luck either. So--I repeat my request, that if anyone has any information, please let me know. In the meantime, I'll keep looking.
