I have a teaset that has bee in the family for at least 60 years. It has a lion facing right (not left) so I am assuming it is not british sterling. Can anyone tell me if this signifies the country of origin?
Other marks are an anchor and the letter 'G'? Under that it has the word 'sterling' , A5005, 1 PINT; it also has a hour glass and what looks like 'I6'.
thanks

The lion-anchor-G trademark belongs to the Gorham Company, an American silver manufacturer. The hourglass symbol was used as a date mark for 1901. A photograph of the marks would help to confirm that this is correct.

Your mark sounds like a Gorham mark. The hour glass mark would date it to about 1884. However, you need to add a picture so we can see what style the letter G is in. You can also search the net to match date the mark better since we can not see it. Hope that helps.

I am sorry! Yes the date would be 1901 NOT 1884. Rea the wrong line. Thankfully the other poster had the right date so I rechecked.
