In the 1880s and 1890s Gorham used numbers within an oval to to indicate that a piece was a sample. Every blue moon I see a sample mark with an S prefix or S suffix outside the oval. These S marks are usually on 1891 or 1892 pieces. I have no idea as to the meaning of these S marks.
Here are a couple of examples:

Both of these pieces bear 1891 year marks.

In addition the first piece also has an arrow mark.

If one thinks of the bottom of a piece of hollowware as the face of a clock, Gorham would usually place their marks at 12, 3, 6 or 9 o'clock.

The arrow is at 3 o'clock.

This arrow is also a mystery to me.

Its a bit blurry but it looks like the date mark for 1909.

Do you think these were one of a kind pieces or have you seen others without the S?

The normal sample mark from this period is an oval surrounding numbers without a suffix or prefix.
The S prefix or suffix is what is unusual about these pieces.
That is what is puzzling.

Here is another Sample with an S suffix.
It has a date mark for 1892

I still don't know the significance of the the S's.

Could it just be something so simple as an 'S' for 'Sample' - perhaps just an added indicator?

Cheryl, That's the first thing that crossed my mind. If that is the case (and intuitively I don't think it is) then the questions are still why is it seldom used and why is it sometime a prefix and other times a suffix?
I don't want to complicate this but there is also a letter A that is sometimes used with what appear to be special order numbers.
