Dear Ladies and Gentlemen:

I have an American sterling silver Art Nouveau bowl, about 6" in diameter. It is marked "Sterling, over a fasces, below which is the number 387". The 8 is faint and may even be a 2.
Can anyone tell me the maker and when it was made?

Thanks much.
Russell

see: Kerr children's flatware

You might consider getting a few basic references like Encyclopedia of American Silver Manufacturers by Dorothy Rainwater

I'd only add that the factory numbers one finds on most pieces of silver from the 19th century and later tend not to be very useful, unless there is a corporate archive with the numbers recorded. Tiffany and Gorham both have such archives extant, and model numbers can be used to help date the introduction of forms into the company's line.

The mark can be found on the web at: k (I trust posting this site is allowed in the forums). Naturally, this source is not nearly as comprehensive or definitive as the previously mentioned reference, but it can be useful.

Hi All,

Thank you Scott, Ulysses and Salmoned.
I don't know how I missed the mark on the Online Encyclopedia... I probably need new glasses...

Its rather pretty for a company that I never knew existed.

Thanks again.
