I was recently discussing the design of the circa 1898 Gorham, Old Baronial pattern with a person who collects it. We could not agree on the origin of this design which has been attributed to William Codman, one of Gorham's most famous designers. I have heard that the animal with teeth piercing the top of the handle is a lion, jaguar, or alternatively a bat with its wings wrapped around the top of the handle. I also recall reading somewhere that the motif is derived from a Venetian Renaissance mask. Does anyone have access to an old catalog devoted to this pattern or other resource that describes its design ? Thanks. Sorry, I do not have a piece to photograph for this posting but it is a common well known pattern.

"Leopard's mask" for marketing purposes, or "head of a lion" as described in the patent text.

Thanks so much for the quick reply. It seems that I had bits and pieces strung together. You have also made me aware that searching patent records is a useful tool!
