Hi All,

I have posted once or twice before... I buy sell & collect American silver, and I picked this piece up at a shop in NJ last week. It is clearly marked with Kerr's hatchet mark STERLING and 669.

It is 4 inches in diameter and 2 and 1/2 inches high. The opening at the top is 3 inches in diameter. It has the gargoyle face and dolphin design. I was drawn to it because a couple of years back, I admired the same design on a vase in a local shop, but the price was too much for me to add to my collection.

What is it?
Did it have a top?
With the beading at the top, I think it may have been an open salt with glass liner, and that someone added in the wood and velvet interior. Am I correct?

Thank you in advance!

Dale

Does it look like it may have had a lid and is the lining original?

THe velvet looks old, and overall the piece seems too large for a salt dish (but I don't have a good sense of visual scale--4 inches seems too wide for a salt). I think it might have been conceived as a little vanity-top jewelry or ring box, and it might have had a lid--or maybe not. There aren't any known Kerr catalogues, so it's hard to check out the form.

Have run into a few of these. Originally a small pillow sat in the opening. It was used for stick pins and small hat pins. Also very pointy hair items, the name of which I can't remember. The idea was to have them handy but avoid pricking the skin. My slightly better than a guess on the subject.

Thanks for all the replies! In answer to the questions about the liner, it does possibly look original. The red velvet is quite worn, and there is a 1/4 inch gap in it from the top of the salt to the bottom of the liner (like it dried and shrunk and finally pulled apart.) Through that gap, I can see a piece of wood which seems to be backing it between the velvet and silver.

I have seen the sewing items with the puffy cushions, and wondered if this was related.

Now my biggest issue is that there is some green residue on it, and I will have to clean it very carefully to avoid damaging the interior further!

I would like to be able to keep it on my nightstand for my rings.

Thanks again!!!
