The other day I was early to a funeral (a friend's mother). To kill time I went into an antique store across the street from the funeral home, where I never buy anything because they're hopelessly overpriced. They had this sugar sifter or pierced ladle marked as silverplate, which brought it down to a very reasonable price for a lovely piece of c. 1860s-70s American figural sterling. It is unmarked. Any thoughts about who made it? The bird and the leaves look a lot--but not exactly--like the bird and leaves on Gorham's Bird's Nest pattern. The bird and the handle made of three rods or thick wires look somewhat like the bird and stem of a Whiting serving spoon I have, with a bird and fruit on it. Other companies that made similar items include Wendt, George Sharp, and Wood & Hughes. IP: Logged |

Oh, and asheland--did you have any thoughts about the cattail ice cream spoon I recently posted in the Silverplate forum? I know silverplate isn't generally your thing, but it's in a style you and I share a taste for. Also hoping dragonflywink will see it and share thoughts, if she has any. IP: Logged |

I just looked at that thread. I would have sworn those to be coin based on the style. Nice spoons for sure, but I'm at a loss as to who made them. My gut would be Whiting, but I'm not sure they did silverplate at that period... Neat spoons for sure! IP: Logged |

Thanks, asheland. When they finally invent that time machine, I'm going to go find all the answers to these maddening mysteries! IP: Logged |

You're welcome! I certainly understand that... I have a spoon that's killing me as I have a good feeling it's colonial, but cannot find anything at all about the maker. IP: Logged |
