I've been adding to my collection of (mostly) American (mostly) sterling coin purses. Here are my three latest, made by Gorham and Whiting in the 1870s. I continue to be astonished by the quality of their workmanship in that period.

The smallest is by Gorham and has the date letter for 1873. It's engraved with engine turning, a little cartouche with flowers at the corners, and the monogram "Florence." It came in its original tooled-leather box, also marked with Florence's name, and a slip of paper saying it was "given to Aunt Flo around 1870." I love the clasp on the box.

The largest is also by Gorham, with the date letter for 1877. It's big enough to carry a business or credit card, although the silk lining is fragile enough that I probably won't use it for that. The photos don't really show the graceful, tapering profile. This is such a well-made purse! The engraving is of typical mid-19th century scrolls and flowers, not the fashionable Aesthetic Japaneque style; perhaps the owner (or whoever gave it to her) had conservative taste. Too bad about the scratches in the cartouche.

And the third one is by Whiting, in the shape of a portmanteau. I love this tiny suitcase! It's more worn than the others, but still charming, and just as well made.

Here are the three purses open, showing their tattered silk linings:

And here's a photo of most of my purses before I got the latest two Gorham ones. The bottom middle purse is a favorite:
