I love checking out other museums' silver collections--often finding myself very envious of the things that other curators have been able to get from generous donors or with generous acquisition funds. Curators, speaking fondly of my colleagues, are notorious about not talking to each other about acquisition policies. Some of us get "masterpiece" obsessed (it's gotta be ART or the director won't buy it); or we get history obsessed (provenance, provenance, provenance). Or they get carried away by names and forget design and craftsmanship. I'd be curious to hear from silver buffs (bad word--enthusiasts) what they think museums ought to be collecting.

Interesting question. I know that I enjoy visiting museums for a couple of reasons. First, I like to be exposed to things that I don't run across in my everyday life. In the case of silver, I marvel at the masterpieces like the Tiffany Chrysanthemum vase or the Bryant Vase. On the other hand, I also like to visit museums to learn about the social context of silver. The Glitter and Gold Exhibition at the Newark Museum was a wonderful example of this (not trying to butter you up, Ulysses). It was fascinating to see how specific pieces of jewelry were worn. In this case, the pieces themselves don't have to be as grand, but the context in which they were produced and used brings them to life.
