My father has a large handforged pitcher.
It is highly decorative and detailed. The
markings on the bottom of the pitcher include
W. Forbes, New Orleans and a wild boar(javelina). Would really appreciate finding
more information on this maker and the pitcher. I have numerous photos available.
Thanks LKS

I'd refer this one to Deborah Waters at the Museum of the City of New York. William Forbes was a New York silvermsith, but there was a great deal of New York/New Orleans back and forth in the early 19th century. The "javelina" mark is an oddity, and I don't think I found it in any of my standard sources. But Dr. Waters is the one most likely to know the movements of William Forbes and any New Orleans connection.

The javelina mark may be that shown in Belden under William Garret Forbes, mark "C." I do not have an example of the mark among my Forbes pieces, but have seen it on a ladle (way out of my budget, more's the pity) in a dealer's shop. It does look like a boar's head, very similar in design to the Paris guarantee mark in use after 1838.
