I was wondering if museum's collection is computerized (or is it planned)? Is it information only or does it include images? Can the public and/or private researchers gain get access to the data?

Interesting question. Technically, yes, our collections are computerized. In reality, however, much of that is very rudimentary at this stage. We have the Argus system up and working at the museum, and we are gradually inputting every object by number into the system. However, that is often very basic and not-helpful information. The real task of inputting all of the catalogue information on each object (we have some 100,000 objects dating back through ninety years of collecting) and getting digital images of each thing into the electronic files is going to take a long time. We have made a hopeful projection of 5-10 years, and that is assuming that we can get the funding to hire the people to do it all.

The most recent things I've acquired in silver are probably in the system with pictures and all, but they're not readily available to the general public except by going through me or our Registrar's office. The day of internet access to museum collections is a long way off--except the way that places like the Met do it on their large, beautiful websites. Security and control issues will keep that kind of thing in abeyance for some time, I'm sure.

In the shorter term, we'd love to be able to have virtual galleries of things in our collection--especially things that often are in storage--that have interest groups wanting to see them. The hook here--after we raise money to actually have the things digitized and catalogued and put on the website--would be that you'd have to be a member to access the virtual galleries on our website.

I hope I'll live to see much of this happen. The ideas are all there, but as always with museums, resources are hard to come by.
