I am looking for information on a teapot manufactured by Webster Mfg Co (of Brooklyn, NY 1859-1873. Besides the Webster Mfg Co the bottom is stamped triple plate and the number 28. The shape of the teapot is what I believe to be called “ball shaped” after a football. The same shape appears as part of the handle. The feet are about 1 ˝ inches high. The lid is missing its pull and I would like to have a duplicate made. To do this I need to know the shape of the original pull. I have looked in several books and cannot find a similar item. Have also visited 2 local antique dealers and a silver plating company. All were helpful but could not find any items of that style. I eventually want to have the teapot re-plated as it belonged to my great grandmother and was probably a wedding gift. Any help would be appreciated. You can email me directly at maryalter@comcast.net. I can send a picture by email if you contact me.

You seem to have a good history for your piece, which is always a nice thing (from a curator's perspective). According to Rainwater, Webster Mfg. Co. was the name used by this company from 1866-1874, although it was founded as E.G. Webster in about 1854 and was sold, as E.G. Webster & Son, to International Silver in 1928. There is really not much more information to give you, since you've clearly done your homework. Were there ever other pieces to go with this teapot? This is a good, stylish piece of electro plate, and I'd clean it carefully before deciding to have it replated. You don't want to wear off the engraving by rough cleaning, or to blur it by replating--if you don't have to. As to replacing the missing finial--that's tougher. Companies made lots--and this sometimes means hundreds--of different forms, and you'll have to find another one with a surviving finial to make a match. My first instinct is to haunt Ebay and type in Webster under the silverplate section and see if one surfaces. EVentually everything surfaces on Ebay.

So far I have not found a similar item on ebay. However, I did receive a copy of an E G Webster Bros catalog with a water pitcher for style 28 thanks to Meriden Historical Society and A Weathers. Magnification of the picture confirms that this is a pattern that matches my teapot, or perhaps it is really a coffee pot. The finial can easily be seen.
Question: is there a source for a replacement finial? (There are such sources for car parts.)

I think for such a repair, you'd have to rely on a silversmith to make a casting from an extant piece, or (and this would be very expensive) model a new one based on studying photographs. I have to warn you that either one of these might be more costly than the value of the teapot itself would warrant.

Any other ideas out there?
