Spoon manufactured by Paye & Baker Mfg. I have a sterling silver spoon that A.K. Smiley Public Library at the top and Redlands Cal on the botton. It also has two arrows with the tips touching and two other arrows that are crossed. In addition there are two swastika symbols at the end of the handle. It is my understanding that this would have been manufactured between 1898 and 1920. Does anyone have any additional information about this interesting spoon or any idea of the value?

Thank you for your reponse.

What you have is a souvenir spoon, a form which was produced in thousands of different patterns representing every place imaginable in the USA from the 1890s through the end of WWI. The swastikas and arrows suggest an Indian theme, not inappropriate for a western locale, although it probably had nothing to do with the library specifically. Paye & Baker probably offered this spoon, without inscription, to institutions in the west to commemorate historic sites, major events, and to serve as souvenirs for visitors passing through. My guess is that you would be able to find this exact spoon with a variety of different place and/or institutional names on it. The swastika, by the way, was not only an Indian motif, but was also a very popular good luck symbol before it took on its sinister meaning in the 1930s.

I just located on Ebay a souvenir spoon by Paye & Baker which uses the swastika specifically as a good luck symbol, along with horseshoes and four leaf clovers. Here's the link, FYI:880171411
