I have an encyclopedia of old silver marks, but could not find the mark for this object in it. I asked about it in the general forum, but got no responses. Perhaps you can help me. I'd like to know:
  1. What this piece was used for? it is only about 3" high and 4" across.

  2. Who made it? Someone drilled a hole through the hallmark, evidentally to secure the top to the base with a screw, but there are 5 capital letters, of which, B S (?) (F or E) and P are visible. Also, it isn't plate, but it is not marked sterling or 925. Would that make it "German silver"? (Of course, there may have been a mark that was taken out by the drill hole.)

  3. Roughly how old is it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I cannot identify the manufacturer of you pierced compote. I do think that it is plated. The EP would help support that notion. Since it already has been drilled with a rather substantial hole in the bottom it would be simple to test it at the hole. The base metal could easily be German Silver. German Silver is an alloy of copper and nickle with no silver at all. German Silver was often used as a base metal for plated articles. I hope this helps.

It appears to be a card dish. The maker is Barbour Silver of Hartford CT. The actual mark is B S C E P -- the E P being Extra Plate, probably over nickel silver or German metal.
