I have one of Sciarrotta's hand made sterling leaf shaped bowls. It sits on three ball feet.
I know that Sciarrotta made items for Gorham and those items have both his name and the Gorham name on them.
Mine only has Sciarrotta, hand made, sterling.
If the mark does NOT include Gorham does this mean that it was one of his earlier works??

I am afraid I don't know Sciarotta--but if there is no Gorham mark, I suspect it means it was made independently of what he did for Gorham. I don't know if that means earlier or later, since I don't know his history. These independent contractors often worked out of their studio while also working for a manufacturer (John Prip, Ubaldo Vitali more recently).

It seems the leaf bowl was a mainstay of the Schiarritta Silversmihts. I have seen little else of work produced by the firm. Simple ladles with attached wire handles were also made and sold to retailers.

The following information was taken from a silver retailer website where they had sold one of the silver leaf bowls with ball feet.

My guess is that your bowl was not sold through another retailer but sold from their shop in Newport.

"Alfredo Sciarrotta ~ Newport, Rhode Island
Italian born, Sciarrotta (1907 - 1985) was smuggled out of Italy in 1944 by U.S Army Intelligence to work on submarine armaments. After the war he opened Sciarrotta Silversmiths in Newport where his skills were quickly noted by Gorham, Shreve Crump & Low and Bailey, Banks & Biddle, the three firms soon began commissioning special orders from. By the time of his retirement in 1975, several of Sciarrotta's works were in the collection of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington."
