For quite a while now I have been reading about how the recession is hitting the arts hard. Contributions are down and museums, dance companies, etc. are limiting their hours and cutting staff. Lately, the economists have been saying that the recession is definitely over (tell that to all of the people who have lost their jobs!). Are you noticing any trends at your institution?

June, you scamp. Trying to stir up talk! Actually, The Newark Museum just faced a really scarey budget crisis when the Governor decided to "zero out" all state funding of history and the arts--eliminating 25% of our annual budget with a stroke of his pen. However, an amazing grass-roots uprising in the state forced him to reinstate almost all of the funding for all of the recipients, so we're ok (for now).

The result of this was that we lost all of our acquisition funds for the year--the economy is so good that our meager acquisition endowments are depleted and membership funds are down. I feel lucky just to have a job.

Lord knows what will become of the arts and institutions here in California -- after two years of wrangling, we're still 8 billion in debt. Everyone I know, from major museums to our little city arboretum, has developed a twitch and not a few gray hairs. As for jobs, I wish I was as lucky as you.

I think we should pass the hat around to all those economists and let them put their money where their mouths are. I only hope that we can all hang on until times improve. There's some clever quote about the arts being the saving grace to an otherwise depressing environment. They keep hope and imagination alive. Oh, hold on. We'll all be saved because Bush's latest round of tax cuts for all of his wealthy cronies will encourage them to give some of it up for worthy causes!
One can hope!
