I have a round (6" diameter) 'bucket' that has cast and applied features and is embedded on a footed tray. It is ornate and has a hinged cover. Believe it might be a large tea caddie. It has the markings "PP&S" in old English type, as well as a hand with the thumb pointed up. I can't find similar markings in the books I've got. Does anyone have any ideas about the maker? Thank you.

Well, it doesn't appear to be an American firm, and if it's English, it's plated. It probably is some firm "P.P. and Son" and an electro-plating firm from the 19th century. The pseudo-hallmarks are typical of what Brit platers use.

Without a picture I can't really be sure, but it also doesn't sound like a tea caddy - I am not aware of such a thing as a "large tea caddy." Tea caddies tend to be smallish, because tea was precious. But the whole attached tray sounds weird (interesting, I hasten to add). A hinged cover suggests some other kind of use--a cream bucket (for clotted or Devonshire cream)? I'll have to appeal to the wider world of forum followers, to see if anyone can hazard a guess without seeing a picture.

Thanks for the information. I thought of it as a tea caddie mostly because of the shape, but it seems unlikely given the size. I'll have to try and post a picture.

It sounds like you have an English silverplate "biscuit barrel". In America we would call it a cookie jar. The hand trademark belongs to the makers Padley, Parkin & Staniforth of Sheffield, ca. 1855-1880.

Brett - thanks a lot for identifying the piece. Did you find the information in a book? I have some other similarly obscure pieces and any new references would be pretty helpful.

Bless you, Brent. I really need to get a book that has marks of English plating firms post-Sheffield era.

The book to have is "Electroplated Nickel Silver, Old Sheffield Plate and Close Plate Makers' Marks from 1784" by George Mappin, published by Foulsham in 1999. It is a little purple paperback with tons of marks, and costs less than $20. It does not go into detail about the makers, but it is an invaluable ID guide. It also has a handy guide to deciphering and dating English design registration codes.

As for identification of the piece itself, it is just from experience.

Glad I could help!

This title appears to be out of print, and unavailable at the published price. Some booksellers are taking orders pending reprinting; others are charging two to four times the original price for remaining copies.

That's what we call a rare book. If it's useful, it's worth the money.
