Hello Mr. Dietz!
I have a question. I know your Museum has exhibits for children, however I do not see anyhting related to silver per se. Being you are near major sports complexes, would it not be a fun thing to see if you could ask some of the Sports teams (or players) to (share, lend) you some of their silver Trophies etc. for an exhibit. Examples being the Berra Museum, the NJ Nets, NJ Devils, & perhaps others in the area. Just a thought from my wandering mind.

Now, Jersey, do you really think children would want to see an exhibition of silver sports trophies? The Superbowl trophy is in fact made in NJ (Tiffany & Co.); but I'm not sure I can think of any major trophy of silver of any significant aesthetic quality. The Stanley Cup? Nah. In the good old days (which in this case would be 1880-1920) sports trophies in sterling were in fact often fabulous, and that might make a very interesting show indeed; but nothing produced in my lifetime for major sports is really of interest (that I can think of, and I confess I'm no sports expert). The Forbes Magazine galleries on Fifth Avenue has an oddball display of old trophies that I've studied on occasion.

On top of this, star athletes are nearly impossible to contact. I tried, for a jewelry exhibition to get in touch with various Newark-born celebrity athletes--and even used contacts with U.S. Senators, etc. etc. and got nowhere. The layers of protection between them and the public are remarkable.

Thirdly, as a curator I don't really do exhibitions for children. I might advise our education department if they had an idea for a children's exhibition that related to my department's collections, but children's exhibitions are a very different thing. I do gear all of my interpretive writing to people who may not know anything, but I don't specifically write for children. Not to pick on our educators, but my guess is they would totally poo-poo any idea of a silver exhibition geared to children. But perhaps I'm being unfair...maybe I should try it...

The Stanley cup is basically a mass-produced "rose bowl" bought by Lord Stanley for 10 guineas on Bond Street. More exciting - but more for silver collectors than children - is the Clarkson Cup. A unique creation, designed and hand-crafted through the collaboration of native and non-native artists from Nunavut and Canada's north. Beth M. Biggs, a silversmith who has spent many years teaching up north was contracted by Adrienne Clarkson to make a trophy for women's hockey. Her lecture about designing and making this trophy - "The Clarkson Cup:Lord Stanley move over! The making of the Trophy for excellence in women's hockey" will take place November 1st, 2007 in the Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto.
Miss Biggs has spoken to the Silver Society a couple of years ago, she is charming, dynamic and recognized in her field, this promises to be a treat.

There is only way I could persuade one of my grandchildren to go see a silver exhibition. That would be to tell him that a rock group was going to be there. Sad but true.

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts has a very nice children's gallery as part of the Gans collection. They also produced a brochure that can be distributed to teachers and students. I always see some kids - and adults - in there when I stop by, and that's seldom at times when school groups are in. Seems pretty effective to me.

Given the space, I think producing a special silver gallery aimed at families with kids would be very effective. Sadly, most museums don't have the space to show their silver collection properly, much less devote space to intriguing children--a mistake, no doubt, but there you are.

I believe the V&A in London has included a children's section in its huge silver galleries.

June & I were recently at the V&A to see their silver exhibit. If anyone is in London do your best to make time for the V&A Silver Exhibit. It is one of the finest standing exhibitions of silver anywhere.

Integrated into what seemed like a 1.5 city block long exhibition hall were Educational nooks. Each nook provided insights and hands on for everyone, children and adults. It is very well done. I would encourage the museums everywhere to seriously consider doing something similar.

Hello again Mr. Dietz!
I know about the Lombardi Trophy, it is gorgeous but it is still just a football, done by Tiffany.
Although the Stanley Cup may have been just a simple bowl to start, the history that has then been continued with the addition of all the names of the winners. The fact that all the players have a chance to take it home & show it off to their friends & families is awsome. I know of no other sport where that is done, and the wild & funny stories that go with taking it home. It is a history of hockey of which the Roc of Newark is now the new home of one of the best teams "The New Jersey Devils" in recent history. Several of the players also have recieved beautifully designed awards as well, such as the Vezina etc. This is why I think your Museum would be most receptive to a childrens exhibit.
I must tell you I was never, until recently a hockey fan but when I had the priviledge of being with the coaches & seeing the childrens faces when being able to be "up close & personal" with the Cup itself I was floored. It is magnificent! This was not a "fan" viewing it was a personal & private invitation by a very generous Mr. Robinson while "living" here. To be able to hug & kiss it, made my day (even though my arm was broken). One of the kids almost passed out by being so close to it.
Maybe if the request went out the Devils or the League at least might be happy to oblige you at seasons end.
No, I am not at the game tonight, yes I had the chance......I get too crazy.
BTW Maybe Bonjovi & Queen Latifa too might come up with some awards to satisfy the music fans.
Whoops, I'm becoming too long winded again.
Thanks for listening.
