Now that it's over, can we talk about the January silver sales in NYC? I don't know where people live, but I always peruse the catalogues of Sotheby's and Christie's on line and do a little mental shopping for the Museum. This year I actually took my Friends of Decorative Arts group to Christie's (before seeing the Fletcher & Gardiner show at the Metropolitan) to survey their silver. I made my group (who are not silver experts) pick out their favorite object and then justify it.

Anyone interesting in dishing?

Well, first of all Christie's had some great stuff and plenty of it. In general prices were strong, particularly for exotic, Aesthetic and top of the line pieces. Tiffany purchased their spectacular Burmese silver gilt and enamel vase for a total of $265,000 with BP.
Even if your wallet was empty it was a pleasure previewing this sale - a museum with touching.

Sotheby's was a little different story. The operative word was less - less stuff and less interesting stuff. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't turn my nose up at any of their merch. But after Christie's supermarket, Sotheby's general store was a little bit of a let down.
Once again the really good and unusual pieces were strong. The great Hopkins-Searles centerpiece went for $301,000 with BP.
The wedding silver for the most part was flat as a pancake.

Moral of the story: If it's great either bring your track shoes or get out of the way, because they'll be running you over to get it.

How did you find out that Tiffany bought the Burmese piece? For that money there are things I'd rather have--but it was a fascinating object.

I had a personal/curatorial hunger for a pair of covered vegetable dishes from the 1880s in the Chinese style--they sold for $10,000 plus tip, and to me they are a hugely misunderstood and masterful example of Tiffany's creativity. Without looking closely, one could see them as merely more of that High Vic repousse.

A recognizable figure from Tiffany was there and her paddle was the last one in the air.
