On March 25, the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian will open "History in the Making: The Renwick Craft Invitational" which runs through July 31st. I am one of the three curators for this exhibition, working with Nicholas Bell, who is the Renwick's curator. Ubaldo Vitali, a New Jersey silversmith with roots in Rome, is one of the four artists in the exhibition. Ubaldo is an old friend, and it was a thrill for me to be able to "curate" him in his first national exhibition. He is the greatest living silversmith in this country, and possibly in the world, and yet he is not as well known as he should be. This show will, I hope, change that. I have written an essay for the catalogue.

This service is one I commissioned for the Newark Museum's 75th anniversary in 1984.

How thrilling to see Ubaldo get the public credit he deserves. I am a huge fan of the man both for his consummate craftsmanship (an understatement) and as a lovely person of class and intelligence. He is also one of the leading experts of the history and craft of the silversmiths art.

I will be looking forward to seeing this show as his work is not out there in great numbers but his skill has been the reason for great scholarship and restoration on world treasures.

Please forgive the gushing but it is hard to hold back - thank you Ulysses.
