Folks, could anyone having any information about Mr. Habensack please contact me as I have collected a good bit of information about him. He was born in 1875 in Germany, and came to the US in 1890 to work for Jos Fahy's at the Alvin Silver Company in Sag Harbor NY. He design and patented several of the most collectable patterns produced by Alvin in the early 1900's, including Majestic, Morning Glory, Bridal Rose, Old Orange Blossom and Raphael. His first Patent listed him as being a subject of the Wilhelm of Germany, and I have a copy of his application for citizenship in 1900, but I cannot find a picture of him, nor can I find out when he passed away (I do not think he is still around at 127 years old). I know he survived the Pandemic Flu as he is listed in the census of 1921 at age 46. His wife Maude (Bennett) died in 1984, I do not know her age as she refused to give it to the census takers in 1921...:-)

This I have documented so far and included receipts from their blacksmith, dentist and haberdashers among other documents between 1890 and 1922, but nothing after that except a reference to his sons marriage in the mid 1940’s.

If anyone has anything they can add I would be grateful.

Thanks so much Ken and Lisa Tireman

Wow, it sounds like you're putting together some wonderful research on Mr. Habensack. Thanks for sharing and I hope we can help in encouraging more information to surface. Have you tried the Sag Harbor Hall of Records?

Thanks; Yes I have put in some time. I have been collecting the Old Orange Blossom pattern, and when I found almost no information on Alvin Silver, I started digging. I spent a weekend in the Hampton’s (East, West, South and Bridge) as well as time in the Sag Harbor Library and Reserved stacks. I also managed to get some time in the "Pennypacker" collection in Bridge Hampton. I will be trying to arrange to get access to the records in RI with Gorham, if I can get Sam to see if they will let me go through the records that are left at Gorham.

I have collected about 4,000 documents related to Sterling Design Patents and have cataloged and cross indexed up to the early 1920's the Patents, the Inventors (Silversmiths / Designers), the Patent Assignees (Manufacturers). I have spend about 5-6 years collecting the first 40 years so far and have about another 50 to go. I will have to get special permission to access the older documents in the Reserved Patents rooms in Washington before i can get back before 1860-1870.

I figure about another 10 years and I should have a fairly comprehensive information database and search engine on Silver Design in the United States.

That at least is the foreseeable future of my research. If anyone wants any information about any of the Alvin Silver that I have I will be happy to share. Just send me an email. I would be happy to get any info available in any form from any source as well.

Thanks Ken and Lisa Tireman
