I'm in a bit of a bind--doing a quick writing job without proper reference books. Can anyone give me information on A.E. Jones? I am aware that he is considered an important (but not top-tier) arts and crafts/art nouveau designer. What are trademarks of his style? What does A.E. stand for? How large was his shop?

Here is some information although not much.

A.E. Jones lived from 1879 to 1954. He studied at the Central School of Arts & Crafts and worked at the Birmingham Guild of Handicraft. He founded A.E. Jones & Co. Ltd. in 1902. He work features light hammer marks, and the best of it features interlaced and pierced rims. The style can be confused with that of Liberty & Co.

I'll see what else I can uncover. I hope this helps a bit.

Thank you so much for your help. Now I have another question: what distinguishes the Birmingham Guild of Handicraft from the London Guild of Handicraft? I am aware that Ashbee founded the London guild. Was the Birmingham guild modeled on that? What did it have to do with the Vittoria Street School? Which designer/makers are associated with it? Again, thank you.

sorry for my tardy reply.

The Birmingham Guild was established in 1890, under the direction of Montague Fordham. It likely was modelled after the London Guild, although there was no direct connection. It was in business at least until 1910. They specialized in simpler wares than the London guild, although many of their pieces were decorated with semi-precious stones. The Birmingham Guild was more commercial- minded overall, and was a greater business success than the more Utopian London guild. Arthur Dixon was the most prominent designer at the Guild. There does not appear to have been a direct connection between the Guild and the Vittoria Street School.

Hope this helps!

Seems there is an A.E. Jones that just recently came on ebay. Item # 1517210248 .... It is a lovely footed bowl. I am not making a pitch for it. I am noting the coincidence.
