[The following is a summary of a presentation given at the NYU seminar Sterling Modernities: International and American Silver from the Arts and Crafts movement to the present -- Saturday, March 16, 2002. For a complete list of all presentations click here ] Silver: Its Ceremonial Luster and Meaning It was refreshing to hear from the artist himself about his own works. Mr. Matzdorf is nationally known for his ceremonial work and this was the subject of his presentation. He organized the works into three ceremonial categories: Secular, Religious and Institutional. Mr. Matzdorf charmed us with his thoughtful consideration of each client's needs and how best to incorporate these needs into the commissioned piece. He showed his playful sense of humor and affinity for symbolism as he explained the reasoning behind his many designs. One of my favorite pieces was the cup he made for the New York Public Library that sits atop four regal lions. The cup includes references to the different branches of the library, the disciplines of study and the global access that the library provides. Another favorite was a wedding cup bearing the birth stones of the couple and blank space to engrave the names of children to come. IP: Logged |
