It is a difficult task to offer any information to assist but I would start first of all with finding out the silver content by a professionall. Secondly and finally consult with an expert in your area about the possibility of the red lining being added to the box at a later date to modify. It is hard to tell the size of it but if it is 3 inches or less my first guess would be an old snuff box. Could you please update your question and provide more detailed description including size. Also give us a bottom view, side view, back view etc... MY ADVICE IS TO CONSULT AN EXPERT IN YOUR AREA ON THE LINING ISSUE. PLEASE DO NOT TRY TO REMOVE IT YOURSELF. I hope it was some help. Possibly a ring box? IP: Logged |

The box has been tested in a metals lab. The results revealed a brass base with silver plating. Experts believe it to be hand crafted, because of the hammered patterns and design flaws. Question: Does anyone know the where, why's and who's of hand crafted, heavy brass keepsakes with silver plating? After consulting the expertise of the lab and others, I still wonder why a craftsman would plate brass with silver, especially considering the simplicity of the artwork. IP: Logged |

a lot of stuff is coming out of India, or the middle east. Some of it does try to mimic the look of old silver. IP: Logged |
