I recently purchased a pair of lovely sterling candlesticks, but I cannot find information on the mark anywhere. I was hoping the following might sound familiar to one of you. The only marking on the bottom of the candlesticks is an "M" with what looks like a sword or a saber through it. Under that is "STERLING" and under that is the number "2142-2". The only other marking I can find is the word "HALLMARK" sort of on the other side of the bottom from the other markings. I tried to take a pic, but my camera isn't very good and I couldn't get a clear pic of the marks at all. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Is this the mark?

If so, it is the Matthews Company of Newark NJ. They incorporated in 1907, merged with Eleder-Hickock in the 30s and were bought out by Wolfgang Schroth in 1965. They became the Hickock Matthews Company and were still in business in the early 80s.

That is exactly the mark! Thank you so much for your help with this. Would my candlesticks then be from the time period of 1907 to the 1930's with this particular mark on them, or did the company continue to use this same mark after the they merged with Eleder-Hickock in the 30s? Thank you in advance for all your help.

Some additional info:

There was a "HALLMARK" mark used by Hallmark Silversmiths, Inc. (circa 1917 to ?), New York City.

It could be that your sticks were made by Hickok Matthews for Hallmark. Apparently, Hickok Matthews is still in business and also made pieces for other companies. See Google!

Also.....

Hallmark Silversmiths merged with the Hunt Silver Co., Inc., to form the Hunt-Hallmark Co. in 1954 and I did find some sticks with a "HUNT HALLMARK" mark. It would appear that your sticks date to some time between 1931 and 1954.
