Can anyone provide any information on this company? Rainwater's book gives just the minimum.

Lebolt of Chicago has a decent write-up in Sharon Darling's book "Chicago Metalsmiths".

Hi, Thanks for the information! I have heard of that book and am interested in finding a copy. Do you know if it is out of print? I also wanted to comment on that bowl you made. I found it very interesting to see the steps in the production. Thanks again,
asheland

Yes. Sadly the book is out of print. It is possible to find copies at used book searches. A quick internet search just found 32 listings of this book. The price ranged from just over $100 to $200 plus. There is a researcher in the Chicago area who is writing a new book on the subject. It will be more indepth and should prove to be a great boon to the study of those men and women who worked in the Chicago area. I have no date for publication yet. I am anxiously waiting.

Thanks for your comments on the bowl making process. I feel it helps others appreciate the steps and skill required in making holloware.

Fred

LeBolt, like C D Peacock and Marshall Fields, were retailers who also claimed to offer hand made silver to the public. In their time, they did have on hand silversmiths who produced things on site. There is also a very strong chance that much of what these companies offered was made up by Kalo to the companies specs and received only decorating and finishing at the retailers. But this is a murky area covering commercial practices which were never much publicized.

I am glad to see someone researching this subject. I remember as a neophyte collector attending the exhibition of Chicago metal smithing from which Darling drew her story. The silver was dominated by loans from the inventory of one dealer. His identifications and taste have tended to influence the course of the study of Chicago silversmiths.

Previously I had posted here something about this in reference to the origins of much Chicago silver. Specifically, that many of the smiths were trained in Sweden and Norway, emigrated to the US and continued working in somewhat the tradition they had been raised in. Even found an example of an unknown smith who had a large following in the Swedish community there. Sometimes it seems the study of silver has an ethnic or cultural bias.
