Hello all,

I recently picked up this unusual spoon and have been puzzling over it ever since. The marks are odd, and I can't quite figure out how it was made!

The marks are :

"JAL" in a circular form, very much in the Arts & Crafts style. I suppose it could be read as JLA as well, if the center letter is the surname initial.

[ST.SILVER], almost certainly a contraction of Sterling Silver

and, upside down, a thistle, very much like a Scottish standard mark.

The spoon is constructed in separate parts joined together. The bowl is formed separately and soldered to the handle, which is split into three "tails" which wrap around under the bowl. The rim around the handle is also formed and applied, as is the rope twist around the inside of the sunken part of the handle. I'm not sure if this section was cut out of the handle, or whether there are separate layers. Regardless, a rather ambitious spoon!

Does this ring a bell with anyone? My best guess is that it is an American or Canadian craft piece by someone with Scottish connections, but I am open to any suggestions.

Brent

James A Linton, Perth, Western Australia, 20th century. Your "thistle" is in fact a spray of eucalyptus leaf and gumnut.

Is James A. Linton related to this silversmith family? James = Jamie ??

James Walter Robert Linton,
born London, 14 June 1869
died Perth, 29 Aug 1947
Australian silversmith, jeweler, woodworker and painter

Jamie Linton, son

John Linton, grandson

Metal Jewellery under Mike Nunn was also discontinued when it was decided that no two colleges could offer the same course. This ended a long tradition at Midland. Prior to Mike Nunn the lecturer through most of the seventies was John Linton, grandson of James W.R. Linton. After he finished teaching he returned to silversmith work full time, firstly with George Lucas at Leederville and then through his own business at Maylands.

Commissions have included a piece for the Queen's 1978 visit and the Mayoral chain for Geraldton. He has also continued to produce silver table-ware from several designs by his father, Jamie Linton. Jamie Linton, who also taught at Midland produced many significant ecclesiastical pieces for Australian Churches, including the cross and candlesticks in St Andrew's Cathedral in Adelaide.

Wonderful! Was just planning on asking about the same maker. Pair of salt spoons with nicely detailed swans set in the handle. Mom bought them online from Australia, so suspected that might be where they were made, especially with the swan motif. Thanks adelapt! (Mark looked like cherry and leaves to me)

Here is another nice Jamie Linton piece, a small mustard ladle. I'm sure the handle is one of his native flowers designs, but I don't know which one. I really like his stuff!

This is one of my Mom's pair of Jamie Linton (1904-80) swan salt spoons, 2-7/8" long, one of them has now returned home to a collector in Australia.
