Over the years that I've been researching Canadian metalsmiths, I've been discouraged by the attitude of many dealers, that there is no good hand-made Canadian work out there. If it's not US or European, it can't possibly be any good.

Collectors: don't be discouraged. There are many excellent smiths out there, who work(ed) in all metals. Some marks to watch out for include the "old school":

  • Giles Beaugrand, Montreal "Beaugrand"
    1906-
  • Lois Betteridge, Guelph "LEB"
    1928-
  • Douglas Boyd, Richmond Hill "Boyd"
    1901-1972
  • Georges Delrue, Val Morin, PQ "georges delrue"
    1920-
  • Andrew Fussell, Toronto "Fussell"
    1904-1983
  • Pat Hunt, Toronto "PH"
    1911-
  • Hero Kielman, Toronto "HK" stylised
    1919-
  • Orland Larson, Mahone Bay, NS "OMFL" or
    LARSON 1931-
  • Helga Palko, Spencerville, ON HP
    1928-
  • Alan Perkins, Toronto [enamels] ap
    1915-
  • [b]Reeva Perkins, Toronto rp
    1917-1994
  • Rudy Renzius, Toronto [pewter] Renzius
    1899-1968
  • Harold Stacey, Toronto "Stacey"
    1911-1979
  • Douglas Shenstone, Toronto "Shenstone"

This is only a sampling of what's out there.
Thanks to Anne Barros for her book Ornament and Object, that includes visuals of most of these marks.

Some mysteries - any guesses?:

H with the Canadian quality mark, possibly Toronto smith Emerson Houghton

LCAD

HT STERLING/IRETTA possibly western Canada

Thanks, Callie. This gives us something to look for. I'm sure we've run across pieces with some of these marks and gone crazy trying to identify the maker without even considering Canada.

Found a really nice salad set by Carl Poul Petersen this weekend at the Pier Show. Dealer thought it was Mexican. We were happy to set him straight and he was happy to learn about Petersen.

Callie, thank you for your very informative post. It is always great to know more silversmiths, especially in the category of Canadian silver which seems to be kind of an overlooked category in much of the literature.

Do you know whether these were makers of silverware, jewelry, or both?

Most of these Canadian made both jewellery and larger items...but I would guess that it was easier to sell jewellery.

Hello June,
As a collector of Petersen Sterling, I would love to see a picture of the Petersen salad set you purchased at the Pier show. Can you post a photo?
Thanks~

Hi. Here is the salad set by Petersen. It surely shows the influence of Petersen's time with Georg Jensen.

Callie,

How difficult or easy have you found it to be to find examples of the work by the smiths you list? The Petersen shop seemed relatively prolific. Did the others you mention have workshops on the scale of Petersen or were they smaller?

June,
Do you realize what a beauty you found? I have seen & held a salad set almost exactly lilke yours & can definitly say that the design, the hammered finish and the sturdiness is second to none even compared to Jensen.
Enjoy!

None of the Canadians I've listed had shops anywhere on the scale that Petersen did. They did individual, one-off pieces...so they're more difficult to find...but more unique as well. I've often found Fussell and Boyd, as well as several of their lesser known Metal Arts Guild colleagues...Bob Ford, George Dancy, Bo Scaife for example. I'd kill to find a Stacey!

Verwald: You are right. The salad set is pretty great. Most often we are just buying for clients and try not to get too emotional, but these set is for us to enjoy.

Callie: Now you have really peaked our interest in the smiths in your list. There's nothing like a challenge to get the silver interest spiked. I'm hoping we'll be able to find some examples down here in the States.

Callie, I found several pieces a year or so ago, and sent one to WEV that had an "MH" I though might be coin, WEV said that he thought it might be Canadian... do you have any CA Makers that used "MH" in a Rectangle as their mark?

Can you describe your pieces and/or post photos? How would you describe the style and how old do they look to be? If it's Canadian, I have several possibilities.

Hi All:
I have a spoon (seems to be a desert spoon because it is slightly larger than a tea spoon). It was made by Savage Lyman & Co., Montreal, Canada 1868-1878 (see: Langdon, page 125). Joseph Savage was the 5th son of George Savage; together with Theodore Lyman they opened a shop in 1851. By 1868 they took partners. Are these silver smiths worthy of your list? Thanks.

Yes indeed, Russell, those names are list-worthy. And Langdon has done a good job for pre-20th century Canadian smiths. My focus is mostly post-1900, the period for which there is much less published information. Thanks for your query though, and happy hunting!
