[17-0329]

A dealer we have known for a few years brought to one of the Miami shows some of her wedding silver for us to see. She says that her neighbor, who was a silversmith, worked for a period for La Paglia. He made the following items in his basement shop. She says his name is Frank Meyers. I believe she said it was in either South or West Orange, New Jersey.

Can anyone shed any more light on this?

It definately has the LaPaglia look. I understand that several smiths in the NY and NJ area did Danish style work for Jensen during the war. I suspect Myers was one of the smiths that would be lost to history were it not for your friend and this forum. I have never seen the mark before nor have I ever heard the name.

I have seen a piece almost identical the the first pictured here, but only marked STERLING. LaPaglia did have some people who worked closely with him in the "International Craft Associates" workshop established shortly before his death. I suppose Meyers could have been one!

Thanks for sharing the information!

I have been told that the correct spelling is
Frank Meyer and not Frank Meyers

There was a Walter Meyer that worked with LaPaglia at Jensen USA. There is a virtually identical piece available now. Scott, if you'll contact me I'll give you the details.

Cheryl,

Thanks for the heads up about Walter. Initially, our friend had some trouble remembering Meyer's first name so I sent off an e-mail to ask if Frank had any relatives named Walter?. Her reply:

THAT IS THE NAME WALTER MEYER. Now I remember. .....Walter it is.

Bowl similar to the above bowl just sold at auction. Cheryl asked and got the following response:

Hello,

Thank you for you interest. Here is a little background on Walter J. Myer.

Born in 1912, Myer was in a group of accomplished American artisans who were contracted by Frederick Lanning to produce wares in the "Jensen Style" for sale in the New York market.

Through the 1940's this group produced both original and decorative designs in the "Jensen Style". Standards for the composition and quality remained high. But a legal action from George Jensen , Denmark ended the sale of theses Jensen Style pieces in the early 1950's, and the contracts of the artists cancelled. Some went on to design for other firms, but Myers went into business for himself creating pieces that were Jensen inspired with his own twist.

We believe this piece dates from the late 1950's.

I've attached photos of the mark. It is also stamped sterling three times.

Let me know if you have any questions,

Todd Wallace
